The preparations has started for the World Masters Championships 2010 in Göteborg and weight training is an important part of the training. I will not do more meters in the pool this year  (not more than 7-8000m/week) but will focus on more weight training in order to swim faster. My goals for Göteborg is 30,79 and 1.09,28 (which I plan to swim like this: 32,6 – 36,6)  Here you can see one of my favorite exercises in the gym. Be careful doing these exercises if you are not someone who has a lot of experioence with weight training! If you have questions please do not hesitate to write and ask me.

September 17th, 2009

Today it is exactly 28 years ago that I swam 1.01,60 in the 100m breaststroke, the fastest time in the world that year. Without Jaked suit, without butterfly kicks, without dipping the head under the water surface, without that extra 1/2 stroke under water BUT with lots of guts and spirit!

Margit Ohlsson – Great swim in 50m backstroke

September 17th, 2009

Margit Ohlsson, Swedish Masters Committeé

Margit Ohlsson, Swedish Masters Committeé

Magit Ohlsson wins the 50m backstroke in her last year of the 60-64 agegroup and swims an amazing 37,14 at the European Championships in Cadiz beating also many swimmers and the winningtimes in younger agegroups. Margit, who is very active in the Swedish Masters committeé, has actually been training online for me since 1999 after join a masters Camp that we had in Spain. Since then it has only been going downhill with her times (meaning she´s been swimming faster :) ) and uphill with the placings winning several titles at the European and World Championships. Margit, who works and represents the Stockholm Police, trains alone with programs that she gets online and then joins our Masters camps when she can. We are looking foward to what she will do next year in Göteborg then swimming in a new agegroup!

Great results from Campmembers!

September 16th, 2009

Elisabeth Ketelsen, Denmark

Elisabeth Ketelsen, Denmark

Elisabeth Ketelsen who attended our camp in Göteborg took her second European Championship title in two days winning the 200 freestyle after taking the 800m the first day. Great swims. Also Jukka Laikari lowered his best times simming 800 and 200 free breaking finnish records.
And, as I predicted, Olivier Boiros gave everybody a run for the money in the mens 50 breaststroke winning with a new world record 30,97! Something for us others to aim for in Göteborg. Good on you Olivier. I´m happy for you. Old Champion Walter Kusch, just 55 swam a new world record too in the 50 breaststroke 31,03 setting new standards and goals for us younger ones :) . But the highlight of the day was that my son Noe swam 25 meters the first time ever in his 5 year and one month short life. That was my highlight of the day!

50m breaststroke-Racing friends

September 15th, 2009

Tomorrow Ronny, Olivier, Timour and the others will race for the European Championship title and record in the 50 meter breaststroke. It will be very exciting to see who wins and how fast they swim. They are my competitors, my opponents BUT also my friends. Some of them have I raced and known a lifetime. The former french breaststroke champion Olivier Boiros have I known since Olivier swam for the French national team and I for the Swedish. After the tough races in the pool we usually had even tougher races all night discovering the nightclubs in the different cities our competitions took us. Timour swam for the U.S.S.R. back when it still excisted and was, and still is, a fantastic 200 breaststroker. He is still topfit, my St. Petersburg friend and I have only beaten him once in 200 breast over the 30-35 years we have raced and that was in Stockholm at Europeans in 2005. But the 50 is a difficult race for him since he doesn´t start to get going until after 75m.
Ronny, a strongman Swede, has been trying to beat me all his life until he finally kicked my butt in 2007 at the age of 51, breaking the worldrecord. Ronny is the current world champion in the 50 breaststroke and should be the favorite. Will Ronny win and take the record back that I stole from him in Göteborg and again in Kyoto? If Oliviers knees have been ok this year he should give Ronny a run for the money. Anyway, I am looking foward to see the results and see what my challengers can do, especially in preparation for the World Championships in Göteborg next year. I do not know how well these three guys know each other but I know them well. And I love to race them. Ofcourse I want to win when I race them (which I can´t now not being in Cadiz) but in the end of the day – we are just a bunch of middle aged friends trying to stay in shape having fun doing it!
