Happy in old fashion suit
Now I know the secret! Now i know why they swim so fast “now a days”. Tried Michael Phelps swimsuit on today and wow, what a difference!!! I dove in, no warmup and cruised to a 1.02 100 freestyle. Nice. Then I tried some breaststroke and after doing a 32,5 push off from the wall 50 breaststroke I got really encouraged to swim a 50m breast all out from the blocks . Have been feeling tired lately from the last three weeks of anaerob training and just yesterday I was struggling with 36-38´s in a set of 8 x 50m. But the suit gave me inspiration and a feeling of gliding through the water like never before. So knowing that the world record in my age group is 31,06 I got up on the startblocks to see if I could knock that time of Mr. Oltner. The suit didn´t let me down! I swam the distance in 30,4 and just felt great. Haven´t swum that fast in a couple of years so that was real fun. And I can just imagine how the proffessionals feel when they swim today. And this suit of Mr. phelps isn´t supposed to be the fastest any more! There are new suits from several other brands that are faster. But this is good enough for me. It is good enough for Michael Phelps to brake the world record in the 200 butterfly, then it is good enough for me. But I think one must also do some training, otherwise it will most likely not work!

Phelps-Killer
Paul Biedermann lived his dream yesterday and showed no respect for the world best swimmer ever Michael Phelps as he beat him with no pardon in the 200 freestyle at the World championships in Rome swimming a new world record, 1.42,00. Paul outswam Phelps and not even a strong last turn could save Phelps from his first loss in 5 years. This is great for swimming, for Paul but also for Michael Phelps. We are looking foward to new fights in the water in the future and I am sure that Phelps will now work hard to get his crown back. Less party and more training. It also shows that Phelps is human, which was almost difficult to believe in Bejing, and can be beaten. Now we like him even more. Helge Meuw came back from a 17th place in Bejing and won the silver in the 100 backstroke. So remember; every race is a new race, a new chance to live your dreams – and kill your heros.

Paul Biedermann in "old" Arena suit
The World Swimming Championships in Rome has already started with diving, waterpolo and Thomas Lurz victory in the 5 km open water swim. But the poolswimmers will not dive into the water and race until the day after tomorrow and the big issues around poolside is not about how many titles Michael Phelps will win but about the ” swimsuits”! Are all suits allowed? Will the suits be for free? Will they be with or without logos? Will I fit in the suit? With which suit will I swim my races in? These issues shouldn´t be on the top of the swimmers mind a few days before they race but so it is. The German National team has given their swimmers “freedom of choice” to avoid big last minute discussions and trouble. Some other countries like the USA do the same, which is rather unusual. Will then Phelps be true to his sponsor or will he choose to swim in a suit that is faster? Will he risk his contract with Speedo? Will he risk to lose?
The Swedish team has contract with Arena and traditionally the swimmers in the swedish team follows the sponsor of the national team. Therese Alshammar swam some great times (personal best!) before the World Championships in a suit that not is Arena. will she be able to repeat these times, or better them in an Arena suit? Well, Paul Biedermann swam in an “old” Arena suit at the German Championships in Berlin and broke the European record! So, it is possible to swim fast, also in pre 2009 suits. But who takes the chance? Rumor says that Paul will swim in a different suit in Rome, despite his contract with Arena. Meanwhile the swedish swimmers are trying their Arena suits in training, some braking like ballons when the swimmers are trying to get them on (but this is not typical for Arena, many people remember Alshammars Speedo suit that broke before the final in the 50 free in Bejing, robbing her of a medalchance. It is more likely a problem by all the new super tight suits) and wondering how much energy and sweat it will cost them in 30+ degree Rome to dress for racing. We need an ice cold ” fridge-room” says one of the swedish coaches instead of the normal “psyche-room” before the races. Rome will be a very interesting World Championships, not only from the aspect of who will win the titles and break the records. No Rome will be more interesting because of the “swim-suit-situation”. Who will swim in what?, will the suits hold?, who brakes the contract with a sponsor or not?, who sacrifices a medal?, which suits are the “fastest” suits?, how much difference does the suits make on the performance?…. It all sounds like a afternoon soap opera but it is the reality in todays world swimming. If it is good for the sport swimming? We will see. But publicity is always good as long it isn´t about doping or cheating. But lets hope that the swimmers can focus on swimming in Rome and not on suits.
