Training for the World Masters Championships

April 27th, 2010

Of course it would be nice to stand here again in August but just being a part of the World Championships in Göteborg is fantastic!

Of course it would be nice to stand here again in August but just being a part of the World Championships in Göteborg is fantastic!

Back in to training again after a chaotic week with too many other things to do. Well, it would be nice to stand on to of the award podium in August but then again; I do not want to stress myself to death doing it :) . I want to go to Göteborg, swim and have fun!

Despite all, the training went well today. I did a typical Glen program:

200m Free/Back. 200m Double Arm Back/Breast. 8 x 25m Breast (45″). One strokedrill, one speed 16″-17″. 4 x 50m Breast kick (1.05″) 44″-45″.  2 x 2x 25m + 50m Breast pull with fly kick. Fins & Paddles (30″-1.15″) 14″-15″ & 32″-33″. 100m easy. 8 x 50m (60″) one breast 90%, one freestyle 75%. Times: breast 35″-35,5″-35″-36″. Free 33″-34″-34″-33″. 4 x 100m Breast kick. (2.05″) 1.40″-42″. 200m breast/Free with fins & Paddles. 100m easy/technique.

Solid strong swims. Three months to go.

Looking foward to swim in Göteborg and meet all of you there!!!

Training for the World Masters Championships

December 13th, 2009

You cannot always expect perfect training conditions as a masters swimmer. But we must let go of the conservative upbringing which taught us that a pool must be 25m, 50m or at least 25 yards in order to get a proper training done. Water is water and I have trained all over the world in the most peculiar shaped pools, lakes and oceans. It is a challenge but when you think creative and use your imagination you can always get some great training done. Like this “obstacle course” in a 10meter long, 60cm deep childrens pool.

Workout of the week

Back to basics

Back to basics

After all the the records the last couple of months it is time to get back to the basics. I will most likely not swim a competition in December and swim a world record per month as promised. Due to a misunderstandment I cannot race in Germany for the next month and I do not have time to travel. But 5 times under the old world records and 7 times under the old european records since August is also  good and Yesterday I started to train for the next season. Swam 2500meter and today my body is very tired!!! This is what I did:

2 x100m freestyle, 200m double arm backstroke/2-1 breaststroke, 10 x 100m breaststroke technique (2.00″) 1,29″, 2 x 100 breaststroke kick (2.00″) 1,40 + 200m breaststroke kick (4.00″) 3,28″ + 4 x 50m breaststroke kick (1.00″) 45″-47″, 8 x 50m breastroke pull with flykick, paddles & short fins(1.00″) 36″-37″, 100m swim down

Anne swims best times in 9 years after 9 weeks of online coaching!

October 18th, 2009

Anne Morrissey from Ireland

Anne Morrissey from Ireland

Anne Morrissey went to the World Masters Camp in Göteborg last August and felt really good about the training there. After my seminar on the 9 week training cykle she asked if I could make her a personalized training plan that she could follow in Ireland since she has not improved her results at all the last years. She has been getting slower and slower. Well, said and done! We worked out an 9 week plan out for her and I have since then coached her “online”. Yesterday, after only 9 weeks of training came the first competition. She swam the best times ever in 9 years! Great job Anne, Congratulations! I am proud of you! Now she is looking foward to swim even faster!

Is it possible to swim World Records every month?

October 13th, 2009

Hamburger Schwimm Club, "Mastersmannschaft-Landesmeister"

Or maybe it is better to ask;  Is it possible to keep a very high level of performance, close to your personal best times, month after month all year? Yes, I believe so! Modern swimming is about swimming fast all the time and fantastic fast sometimes! Therefor you must swim fast in training and in competition throughout the year. Gone are those days (I hope!) when we trained ourselves down to a zombie status for 5-7 months only to taper for three weeks and hope to swim fast once a year. I have been lucky enough to swim  3 world masters  records the last three months (one in August, one in September amd one now in October) and the idea came to my mind that maybe I should try to swim a world record a month for the last two remaining months of the year! That would be fun! And not only fun, but also prove my theory about swimming fast as often as possible. To swim one world record a month for 5 months in a row is of course a challenge, not a small one, and it puts some pressure on me but it is worth a try! Don´t you think? Since I am training according to my 9 week cyklus/rythm it means also swimming fast when I´m not in the end of that 9 week cyklus. I can ofcourse be flexibel and make the rythmus shorter but it is important not to miss out on important training details in this process. How I do that is my secret. Anyway, let´s see if it works! I challenge myself and you and say: I bet you I can do it!

The preparations has started for the World Masters Championships 2010 in Göteborg and weight training is an important part of the training. I will not do more meters in the pool this year  (not more than 7-8000m/week) but will focus on more weight training in order to swim faster. My goals for Göteborg is 30,79 and 1.09,28 (which I plan to swim like this: 32,6 – 36,6)  Here you can see one of my favorite exercises in the gym. Be careful doing these exercises if you are not someone who has a lot of experioence with weight training! If you have questions please do not hesitate to write and ask me.
